Meteor Showers Should Make You Happy - 01 September 2010

Ten days ago the Perseus Meteor shower was at its best as the remnants of a comet flew past the earth and some pieces were pulled into the earth's gravitational field burning up as they descended through the atmosphere in an amzing display. Sceintists tell us each "shooting star" travels at 140,000 miles per hour. The sheer scale of this spectacle is awesome and got me thinking.

If my memory serves me correctly, scientists also tell us that the earth is approxiamtely 5 billion years old and is probably half way through its life. Somewhere in the oceans near a volcanic vent about 500 million years ago the very first life form evolved as a unique mixture of gases and chemicals fused together under immense water pressure. Since then many life forms have evolved whilst others have dissapeared. Charles Darwin said that natural selection would mean the strongest forms of each species would thrive and evolve.

We should therefore count ourselves lucky as we represent some of the strongest of our species which have evolved over many thousands of years. What is our purpose? In the great scheme of things nothing more than to procreate and help our species thrive. Being of an age where one considers it, what do we do when the body clock slows us down a little or something else dictates we will not assist in the great evolution? Well we should do everything possible to make everyone we meet each day happy. This way we maximise the general conditions for others to procreate.

So next time you see a shooting star - remember to be happy - you are helping our species.
